Kim Williams
We want to thank Irishman Kim Williams for his great effort in running the Virgin London Marathon in April, 2011 to raise funds for
Child Health International.
We are delighted to report that he raised £4,670, well over our target of £3,000.
Kim is a management accountant working in the oil industry and is a keen sportsman. He rowed for Trinity College Dublin while an undergraduate there, and then played rugby for University College Cork while studying for a postgraduate degree. More recently he has been playing for local clubs in Berkshire and Buckinghamshire.
Kim says: I suffered quite bad asthma as a child, and can identify with the frightening nature of breathing difficulties and the panic and extreme discomfort that one can face, fighting to force some air into an ineffective pair of lungs. I remember being rushed to hospital for a nebuliser treatment and being 'knocked' in the chest region to loosen it up. Although fortunately I have grown out of the condition, I empathise with those with Cystic Fibrosis; an even worse condition that is set not to improve, and with the suffering that their respiratory problems inflict. I hope through training, soliciting sponsorship for, and running the marathon to help some of those with Cystic Fibrosis to feel some of the joys of fresh air that are taken for granted by many of us.
Child Health International works in various ways for children with cystic fibrosis. The money raised by sponsoring Kim will be used to supply nebulisers to children in Moldova.
Difficulty with breathing is the most common symptom of cystic fibrosis, resulting from the accumulation of sticky mucus in the lungs. Chest infections, poor growth and weight gain, and digestive complications often result as the child grows. Nebulisers provide relief for these conditions.
